Welcome to April! Starting today, every Friday I’ll be sharing three things that I learned this week and a goal that I have for next week. As a chronic journal writer (twice a day for the better part of the last 23 years) I find that self-reflection is a critical part of the path to becoming who I want to be and manifesting the community I want to be in. I invite you to take this weekly journey with me and have your own Friday Reflection process. Here’s what I’ve learned this week:
- I thrive (at work and at home) when I have a collaborator – Three years ago I was the Director of Development and Communications for a 100 year old teen pregnancy prevention organization. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to hire a brand new staff. I chose a new friend and great colleague to be my Deputy Director and over the course of two years was able to do more than I ever imagined in that role. Together, we could surmount any challenge because we were a dynamic duo. Having her made me want to come into work and improved the quality of each day at that job. At EDF I have lots of collaborators – and I’ve found that having a primary collaborator for each of my projects help me to hold myself accountable. It also makes me smile more.
- Once in a while it’s fun to stay up late – I’m typically in bed at 10:30pm and up at 5:30am all week. Last night I didn’t go to bed until midnight. That’s right, midnight! I was busy having a great time on a double date with a co-worker and her wife in Brooklyn. We went to an event called Terry Dame's Weird Wednesdays and watched several women make crazy awesome music on homemade instruments. Totally worth getting a little less sleep.
- Design thinking is a new approach that I can’t wait to apply – When a new way of thinking starts to gain real traction in the social enterprise sector, I like to be an early adopter. So when IDEO.org came to my attention I just knew that Human Centered Design Thinking was a skill set that I would want to learn. But the opportunity to do so never appeared. A few weeks ago one of my coworkers mentioned to me that he was planning to take a free online Design Thinking course but that he missed the most recent cohort. This was my chance. I offered to take it with him and now starting on April 26th we’ll be taking the class together and applying it to a project at work in real time.
Next week my goal is to have three conversations with co-workers that I don’t know that well.
Wish me luck and enjoy your weekend!
